This illustration by Stephen Gammell from the book Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark frightened the living piss out of me when I was in third grade. I liked the book a lot until I turned the page to find that thing [not] staring at me… the book and I were not friends for many years afterward.

We had this book growing up. Who would buy this for a child? My older sister loved to torture me by using it for bedtime stories.

This exact picture is why my little brother, to this day (25 years later), does not trust me. I finally talked him into letting me read it to him when he was 3 or 4 years old. When i got to this page I shoved it in his face and yelled “AGGHGHHH!!!”
He immediately wailed in terror and ran off.

I’m freaked now. Creepy. Glad I didn’t see it at 3 or 4 though haha!
