Tableau of Alice, the March Hare and the Mad Hatter at the tea party in ALICE IN WONDERLAND reproduced from THE LIFE AND LETTERS OF LEWIS CARROLL by Stuart Dodgson.
As a big reader as a kid and a fan of YA fiction in general, I am surprised that the Sugar Creek Gang was unknown to me. Too bad, because their adventures seem somewhat (unintentionally?) nefarious. Like killing lots of wild life (including a battle with bees), getting involved with Chicago hits, the Mexican border, and Indian Cemeteries. They also scoff at the government and hop on over to Cuba and ride watermelons (?). I love that they got a “modern” update on the cover art too – that weird, shiny realistic style that highlights the fat kid. More favorite covers below/after the jump.
